Hephzibah V. Strmic-Pawl - President (Founder)

Hephzibah V. Strmic-Pawl - President Hephzibah is currently a Sociology PhD candidate attending the University of Virginia. Her research interests focus on race, racism, inequality, and intersectional analysis. She is currently working on her dissertation, which explores the possible rise of a multiracial population. Outside of UVa, Hephzibah has worked with several non-profits and student justice oriented groups, from community beautification projects to sexual assault advocacy organizations to working as a director for a state student association. And, perhaps most importantly for this organization, Hephzibah attended four community colleges before attaining her Bachelor's from University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Master's from the University of Chicago. Hephzibah gratefully acknowledges her roots in Piedmont Community College (Charlottesville, VA), Bunker Hill Community College (Boston, MA), Harold Washington Community College (Chicago, IL), and Truman Community College (Chicago, IL).

Matthew W. Hughey - Board Member

Matthew W. Hughey - Board Member Matthew recently attained his PhD in Sociology from the University of Virginia. Currently, he is Assistant Professor of Sociology and African American Studies at Mississippi State University. He has an impressive range of research interests that include race, racism, popular culture and media, and Black Greek Letter Organizations. Specifically, he focuses on racial identity formation as a dynamic and ongoing process with special attention to how racial identity (re)produces and contests racism, inequality, and relations of power. Matthew has numerous impressive publications, has taught many courses, and was awarded the Z Society Faculty of the Year award at University of Virginia. As Matthew has experience publishing, teaching, and mentoring, and teaches at a university, he is a wonderful asset to this organization.

Mildred L. Strmic - Board Member

Mildred L. Strmic - Board Member Mildred has a Master's from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor's from Northeastern Illinois University. She has taught English and Women's Studies related courses at Truman Community College (Chicago, IL) for the last 30 years. For the last three decades, Mildred has educated and mentored hundreds of students, with many declaring their gratitude for a supportive, yet challenging pedagogy. Furthermore, Mildred herself also has roots in a community college education. Continuing College is fortunate to have a wonderful teacher and veteran of the community college system on its board.
